TENNIS MADE IN AMERICA...
ANDRE AGASSI vs. ANDY RODDICK TO HEADLINE SHRIVER'S CHARITY TENNIS CHALLENGE

Baltimore, September 11 - The area's premier charitable sporting event will celebrate its 16th anniversary thanks to the continued support of Chevy Chase Bank, The Baltimore Sun, Salomon Smith Barney and many other loyal sponsors and contributors, it was announced today by Tournament Chairman and Founder, Pam Shriver.

The 2001 Chevy Chase Bank Tennis Challenge presented by The Baltimore Sun will be held on Wednesday, December 12 at 7 PM, at the Baltimore Arena and welcomes American tennis superstars Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick facing-off in the Tennis Challenge's Feature match.

Agassi, one of tennis' greatest champions and career Grand Slam winner, along with Roddick, today's hottest and rising tennis sensation, will be joined by Shriver, who will host the evening's events and serve as special guest Chair Umpire of the Orioles Challenge Match featuring 6-time defending champion, Brady Anderson. The Tennis Challenge also welcomes back 1998 Wimbledon champion, Jana Novotna in the Salomon Smith Barney Legends Match.

"We're thrilled to have two of the best and most exciting tennis players in the world right here in my hometown. Andre's one of the biggest names in all of sports and Andy Roddick is a future superstar who already is proving he is one of the best in the world," said Shriver. "After their amazing and gritty performances in the US Open where both played epic quarterfinal matches, the fans here in Baltimore are in a for a real treat."

At an age when most players start thinking about retirement, 31-year-old Andre Agassi is a man on a mission with only one goal in mind--to add more Grand Slam titles to his already crowded trophy case. In 1988, he stormed into the Top 10 for the first time, winning six titles in seven finals. He continued making his mark on the men's Tour, capturing his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 1992. In 1999, Andre captured his first French Open title and a second US Open crown, winning five titles for the second straight year, and finishing the year at No. 1 for the first time in his career.

His inspiring victory at Roland Garros moved him into an elite group of tennis greats as one of only five players to win singles titles at all four Grand Slam tournaments. Andre kicked off the 2001 by capturing his third Australian Open title and victories at Indian Wells and Ericsson Open. His recent quarterfinal match against Pete Sampras at the 2001 US Open will likely go down as one of the greatest matches in tennis history.

It has been a busy couple of years for Andy Roddick, the rising star dubbed the "future" of American men's tennis. He finished 2000 as the No. 1 junior in the world, winning junior Grand Slam titles at the Australian and US Opens without dropping a set. This March at the Ericsson Open in Miami he became the youngest quarterfinalist in the event's history. In the following month he garnered his first ATP title at Atlanta with straight set victory over Xavier Malisse. His winning streak continued a week later at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston, besting Hyung-Taik Lee to secure his second straight singles trophy. This August, he battled to his third career title on the hard courts of Washington, DC, with a straight sets win over Sjeng Schalken the finals. After an unprecedented US Open match schedule that included four night time sessions and a thrilling five-set quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Lleyton Hewitt, Roddick proved he has arrived.

The Chevy Chase Bank Tennis Challenge presented by the Baltimore Sun is played to benefit the Baltimore Community Foundation, a publicly endowed non-profit organization that donates proceeds to area children's charities. Since the event's inception in 1986, over $2.6 million has been distributed to child-related causes.
