ALL-TIME TENNIS GREAT RETURNING TO BALTIMORE
MARTINA NAVRATILOVA TO JOIN PATRICK MCENROE
IN TENNIS CHALLENGE
Baltimore, November 6 – One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Martina Navratilova, returns to Baltimore to join current U.S. Davis Cup Team Captain and 1989 French Open doubles champion, Patrick McEnroe in this year’s Salomon Smith Barney Legends of Tennis Match. This exciting match is part of the 2002 Chevy Chase Bank Tennis Challenge presented by The Baltimore Sun, which will be held at the Baltimore Arena on Tuesday, December 10 at 7 PM.
Martina Navratilova revolutionized women’s tennis with her superb athleticism and raised the sport to an entirely new level. By the time she retired in 1994, she had amassed a staggering number of records including168 pro singles titles and 18 Grand Slam singles championships. She holds a record nine Wimbledon championships and more singles matches than anyone in tennis history with an overall 1,438-212 won-lost record. She also won over 165 doubles titles and earned more than $20 million in prize money.
The evening also showcases Lindsay Davenport and Monica Seles in the Event’s
Feature Match, as well as 7-time defending champion, Brady Anderson, and other
hometown sports heroes from the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens who will also compete
in the Orioles Challenge Match.
Martina and Tournament Host, Pam Shriver, formed one of the most formidable
and successful doubles teams during the 1980’s. The duo boasted a record
109 consecutive doubles match victories from 1983 to 1985, including the first
ever Grand Slam in women’s doubles (1984), and also earned the WTA Tour’s
Doubles Team of the Year for nine straight years (1981-1989).
Shriver was recently inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Navratilova, who was integral to her success, served as Pam’s presenter this past July at the enshrinement ceremonies in Newport, RI. In conjunction with this year’s Tennis Challenge, there will be a Hometown Hall of Fame Tribute on December 9, 2002 at Raven’s Stadium in honor of Pam’s achievement and Martina hopes to be part of this celebration as well.
The Chevy Chase Bank Tennis Challenge presented by the Baltimore Sun is played to benefit the Baltimore Community Foundation, a publicly endowed non-profit organization that donates proceeds to area children’s charities. Since the Event’s inception in 1986, over $3 million has been distributed to child-related causes.
